From Pastor Matt Johnson - South Sydney Anglican Church

It has been a great pleasure working with the Jesus Cares ministry over the past year. Their staff, volunteers, and executive all have evangelistic hearts that long to see the least, the last and the lost of Sydney know Jesus as Saviour and Lord. They also have big compassionate, pastoral hearts that are forever working to bring God’s truth to bear on the trauma, suffering, and difficulties experienced by the homeless and disadvantaged people they serve each week. If you have a desire to see people know Jesus and you would like to be trained in evangelism and think about complex pastoral care, I would highly recommend the Jesus Cares Christian ministry.

Helping Hands

Who are we? “Helping Hands” is a practical ministry of Jesus Cares. We have small teams of volunteers who can provide practical help such as gardening, weeding, mowing, and limited handyman work for those in need in the local and wider community. Our teams enjoy working together to show Christ’s love to those in need and as such we do not charge for our services. Our teams work under a team leader and we are covered by the Jesus Cares insurance policy.

OUR SERVICES

Gardening

We can provide general gardening, weed removal, mowing and hedging. We can help tidy up afterwards but may not be able to remove all the green waste depending on green bin availability. With up to 10 people in our teams we can get a lot of work done in 2.5 hours.

Handyman work

We can provide general handyman jobs (excluding all electrical, plumbing and roof work), however we are not licensed tradesmen or women so cannot guarantee or warranty any of our work.

Helping Hands Project – Saturday 17/8/24

A team of 8 of us went to Ermington from 9 am to 11.30 am this Saturday helping to clean up the yard of Emilio who is a single parent and lives in a housing commission house.

Emilio has been a client of Hope Connect, the Community Health Team who referred him to us, as he is at risk of being evicted if he could not maintain the difficult yard since he had his whipper snipper recently stolen.

The team was led by Justin and Michelle Liew and included Lily, Beth, Rowena, Josh, Jay and Lukas.

We were blessed with a beautiful winter’s day and enjoyed working together to tidying up the garden for Emilio.

Beth and Rowena brought wonderful scones, fruit and cake for an amazing morning tea for us all.

Our team worked together wonderfully with Josh (in whipper snipper training), and Jay on the mowing. Lily, Beth, Rowena, and Michelle and Justin teamed up and did an incredible job on the front and side garden beds which had a lot of weeds, as well a friendly blue tongue lizard.

We prayed for safety before we started for Emilio and again at the end and gave thanks for the great day.

Emilio was so grateful that our team had come and could not believe how much we got done. He messaged me afterward saying he thought it looked this a new garden and wanted to say “thanks a billion” to all the entire team.

Thanks to everyone involved in making this a wonderful project. Please see the before and after photos below.

PS: Emilio wants to join HH as a volunteer because he “is in the bad books with the man upstairs”. I was able to share John 3:16 with him and offered to meet up later to talk about faith. He said he wants to go to Telopea church sometime too. Keep praying for Emilio.

How can you refer to Helping Hands or be envolved?

We will look to accept referrals from local churches, home care groups, and other community-based organisations and charities.

The jobs are for those in genuine need or hardship and not really for those who are looking to have their lawns mowed regularly when they have means to do it. This will be assessed sensitively at the discretion of our assessment team.

You can refer any potential projects by emailing the Jesus Cares office at coordinator@jesuscares.com.au or by calling Jesus Cares on 0444 558 352

If you are interested in being part of a Helping Hands team please go to ‘volunteer’ or email us at coordinator@jesuscares.com.au.
